12 Easy Ways to Improve Your Boating Safety

When you own a boat, whether you use it for fishing, sailing, cruising or water sports, boating. From your very first boating adventure, you may start feeling that everything truly is better while on the water. Suddenly, seaside destinations look prettier, marinas become your natural habitat, sunrises take your breath away, and sunsets become more mesmerizing. That’s the moment you start appreciating the beauty of nature and wildlife – when you want to share unforgettable moments with the ones you love most – and are thrilled to meet new boat lovers with whom you can share your passion and experiences and learn from.

While boating is all this and much more, the increasing interest in recreational boating in the last few years has led to a rise in the number of boat accidents in the U.S. According to the U.S. Coast Guard 2020 Recreational Boating Statistics Report published in June 2021, from 2019 to 2020, there were a total of 767 boating fatalities nationwide and 3,191 non-fatal injured victims (an increase of 25.1% and 24.7% respectively, compared to 2019). Moreover, boating activities and boat sales skyrocketed during the pandemic. Other related services that have flourished in the meanwhile include insurance policies, claims, and calls for towing assistance, only to name a few.

Unfortunately, more boating time on the water also meant more accidents, injuries, and even deaths (there was a greater risk of deaths, injuries, and accidents with alcohol as the leading factor for over 100 deaths in 2020, 18% of all fatalities). The top 5 accident-contributing factors are inexperience, improper lookout, inattention, too much speed, and mechanical problems, whereas in 75% of fatal boating accidents, in which the cause of death was properly identified, drowning was the leading cause, with 86% of boaters not wearing a life jacket. Besides, 77% of deaths were of boaters who had not received any boating safety instructions, whilst the most involved vessels in reported accidents were personal boats, open boats, and cabin motorboats. Let’s keep in mind that according to statistics, motorboats (50%), kayaks (15%), and pontoons (9%) were the vessels used that registered higher death rates.

Even though boat accidents happen year-round, increasingly during the Summer months, the good news is that boaters can prevent most of these occurrences by learning and adopting boating safety best practices and by using their common sense.

The Importance of Boat Responsibility While on the Water

While recreational boating experiences can be extremely enjoyable and fun characterized by moments with family and friends on board, beautiful outdoor explorations, endless water sport activities, and fishing, being a boater also requires being prudent on the water to ensure everyone’s safety is not compromised. Also, to keep your boat in proper conditions in order to be operated as well as you and all passengers to keep the environment clean and safe for all boaters and water lovers.

Just like texting while driving has become a major cause of road fatalities, texting while boating isn’t different. It can even be more dangerous and lead to more fatal accidents since maritime traffic is more unpredictable and can come from all directions. Boat operators are responsible for the safety of passengers on board; therefore, they should maintain and operate their vessels accordingly.

Adopting good practices, as well as being prudent and thoughtful will make you feel more relaxed and enjoy boating even more, without any worries. We have put out together a list of 12 easy tips on how to improve onboard safety for making the most out of your boating hours and having an amazing boating experience.

12 Easy Tips to Improve Your Boating Safety

Take a boating safety course

In the U.S., for instance, the U.S. Coast Guard provides boating courses with instruction to boaters at all levels. Alternatively, many other organizations offer a range of specific boating safety courses, most of them for free.

Get a vessel safety check

A Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is an important procedure that is usually free and comes with no consequences if the boat does not comply with applicable regulation. Its main objective is to certify boating as a safe activity for everyone on the water.

Equip your boat with proper life jackets for everyone onboard

YoYou should bring life jackets on board for every single passenger of your vessel. As there are many types of life jackets on the market, make sure the ones you bring onboard meet passengers´ characteristics such as their height, weight, and the on-water activities you want to carry out. Last but not least important, educate everyone onboard on the importance of using them properly.

Do not drink alcohol

As alcohol tends to affect vision, balance, judgment, and coordination, both boat operators and passengers should avoid drinking any kind of alcoholic drinks when swimming or boating since one can fall into the water, swim into a propeller, or even cause the boat to capsize. Besides, boating can augment the effects of alcohol due to weather conditions such as wind, wave motion, and of course, the sun. On the other hand, being drunk increases the probability of getting a cold water shock.

Don’t overload your vessel with people nor cargo

You should never load your vessel beyond a certain limit to make sure you and your passengers are safe and sound while on the water since beyond a certain amount of weight, boats become unstable and can capsize. For this reason, it is always a good idea to stay below your boat’s max weight capacity.

Navigate at a safe speed especially in high traffic areas

Besides obeying the required speed limits, boat operators should navigate at safe speeds in congested waters. Since there are areas where vessels are more likely to collide with other vessels if they are not conscious enough, ensure that you follow the recommended navigational practices. This does not mean that navigating in the open sea is an easier task; it is just not as dangerous as congested waters. Thus, it is critical that boat operators take all the necessary precautions to avoid any type of accident.

Count on a passenger as lookout additional to the operator

Having a passenger help the boat operator as a lookout is highly recommended, especially when you are boating with many people. This person will play a fundamental role assisting you in tasks such as staying alert for oncoming traffic and paying attention to all radio communications and swimmers that you might encounter on the water. Therefore, using sight and hearing at all times is important so that you can navigate safely.

Check the weather beforehand

Checking the short-term and long-term weather predictions should be a must before any boat ride since you should always consider these weather forecasts before any boat trip. Depending on each situation, you will be able to determine the key items or supplies you need to take with you to keep you safe while boating.

Keep a safe distance from the shore, other vessels, and people

By keeping a safe distance from people, vessels, structures, and shoreline, you can avoid boat collisions, injuring the passengers on board, other people, or even damaging property. When taking precautions, remember to consider other important factors such as the weather, speed, visibility, and other navigation obstacles you may encounter during your boat trip.

Pay particular attention to not leaving children unattended

Often children’s behavior can be unpredictable and irrational. For this reason, never leave children, especially young children, unattended, nor trust a child’s life to another child. Besides, make sure they wear appropriate life jackets and understand the dangers of being irresponsible while boating so that they always keep you informed anytime they are near the water.

Take the necessary equipment with you

Carry boating accessories on board can be extremely useful, in case incidents arise. While preparing your next boat trip make sure to include basic objects such as a flashlight, a first aid kit, ropes, lights, pyrotechnic red flares and orange distress flags, a cell phone preferably stored in a waterproof plastic container should you need to call for assistance, as well as equip your vessel with fire extinguishers.

Be prudent and use your common sense

Going for a boat trip can be an extremely enjoyable experience out in nature, either you use your vessel to go fishing, socialize, day cruising, or other recreational activities. To ensure your time on a boat is quality time, always play safe, use your common sense, and be prepared for any type of event.

Keep in mind that most incidents and collisions can be prevented if boat operators are properly informed, take all necessary measures, and always comply with the best boating safety practices. Furthermore, that they are aware of potential dangers and respect other boaters, swimmers, water sources, and the environment.

At Navnit Marine, your boating safety is our top priority. To ensure you have thoroughly retained and checked the most crucial boating information, do not forget to download, print, and keep this checklist at hand before you go boating next time. Remember that, when well-applied, these great tips will significantly reduce the risk of accidents you and your passengers may experience, make your time on the water memorable, and help you become a better boater.

5 Health Benefits Of Boating

Being on a boat can be pretty exciting. In fact, boating has become a favorite fun activity among many families for the outdoor thrills it has in store for boaters of all ages. Here are some really fun boat activities for every age.

1. Fishing Expeditions

Fishing is a classic form of boating fun. The best thing about fishing is that all ages can be involved in this exciting activity. As an adult, you can indulge your deep love for fishing while the kids participate in their own simple ways and learn about the activity as well. What’s better? Both the kids and the adults can keep the good times going later on when making a meal out of the catch at barbecues and cookouts.

2. Tubing

Tubing is becoming a popular water-based activity for kids. Kids like to get on tubes attached to boats and experience the adrenaline-induced thrill of being pulled along on water at high speeds. As an adult, the experience of seeing kids face their fears bravely, explore their wild sides, and have the time of their lives can be pretty rewarding.

3. Water Skiing & Wake Surfing

Water skiing and wake surfing is not just for adult-sized adrenaline junkies, but for kids and regular adults as well. Water skis and wake surf boards make boating a lot more fun, particularly for the high-energy fun experiences they offer.

4. Exploration

Boating can be both fun and educational, for both kids and adults. Going to unique and popular destinations and exploring their aquatic wonders on a boat can be quite exciting, especially when exciting wild fauna and flora is part of the trip.

5. Touring

Touring on a boat can be a pretty unique way to learn about destinations. Visiting a beach front attraction on foot or by car is one thing, but visiting it on a boat is a different thing altogether. Both kids and adults can have fun with this activity.

6. Picnic on the Water

Sometimes, the good times roll just as you sit there with your family relaxing. A boat offers a great opportunity for this. You can bring snacks and other treats on your all-family boat trip and relax and have quality time while floating on the water without a care in the world. The options are limitless!

5 Health Benefits Of Boating

If you’ve ever stepped on a boat, it’s likely you’ve experienced that shot of freedom and relaxation as you pulled away from the mainland.

Well according to recent studies, it’s not just in your head. Cruising the open water, feeling the fresh breeze, and listening to the sound of the crashing waves—whether you’re boating and just hanging on the shore—is proven to have health benefits.

Indulging in your favorite pastime And boosting your wellbeing? Win-win. And on the off chance you haven’t given boating a try, Here’s 5 reasons why you definitely should. For your health, of course.

1. Boating is the fastest way to slow down

Raise your hand if endless meetings, tight deadlines, extra hours, and being plugged in 24/7 are all part of your daily life. We hear you! Nowadays, most people are overworked, constantly connected to their devices, and struggling to find the right balance between their work and personal life. But once you’re on deck there are no meetings, no deadlines, and no rush hour. It’s just you, fresh air, and water wherever you look—it’s like a remedy to modern life. Telling someone you’ve “gone boating” is like unplugging from the world on shore, leaving your worries—and hopefully your devices—behind, which in today’s digital age is the ultimate luxury. Whether you’re hitting the water for a whole weekend or just a few hours, boating is a great way to get away from it all and slow down with ease.

2. Boating helps you fall into a “Blue State of Mind”

Ever wondered why you feel so calm when strolling along a riverbank or playing in the ocean? Academics have confirmed what might be a no-brainer for every seafairer: being near, in, on, or under water provides all kinds of emotional and physical benefits. Scientist and marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols calls this effect “Blue Mind,” a mildly meditative state characterized by calm, peacefulness, unity, and a sense of general happiness and satisfaction with life in that moment, which can be triggered by being close to water. It only makes sense that being on a boat is one of the best ways to tap into the wellness benefits of water. Let the sea set you free!

3. Boating reconnects you with nature

Boating might be one of the best ways to spend quality time outside, far away from traffic jams, office walls, and the kids arguing over the TV.Once you’ve stepped onboard and left the busyness ashore, you can dive into the overwhelming beauty of nature.Feeling the waves roll below you, letting the wind propel you toward the horizon, or wave-hopping with a little help from some horsepower. It’s a hell of a way to experience the most amazing sunsets and sunrises. Is there any better way to unwind and reconnect with the Earth than soaking up the stars from your deck-side sunlounger or an unexpected “hello” from a dolphin? We think not.

4. Boating turns family and friends into crews

It’s no secret that work-life balance is increasingly hard to find and that spending quality time with friends and family is one of the best antidotes. With screens encroaching on every facet of our life, you know there are few activities that manage to bring us together the way boating does. And it’s not just the threat of being thrown overboard. (Speaking of bickering kids…) Far away from Netflix and Wifi, you can truly reconnect with your favorite people without distraction. Enjoying some fun time together as a team, manning the boat and exploring the natural world, creates bonds and strengthens the family unit.

5. Boating, the first workout that doesn’t feel like a punishment

Does going to the gym make you feel like a hamster in a hamster wheel? Same. What about swapping the smell of stale sweat for sweet ocean spray? Boating is the best outdoor gym, mostly because it doesn’t feel like a workout at all.Just the act of balancing on a boat requires core activation and balance. You can take it up a notch with sports like water-skiing, diving, or wakeboarding. An afternoon sailing burns around 800 calories! Boating boosts your activity level without the drudgery of reps.

The Verdict: boating is good for your nerves, your waistline, and your family. “So you’re saying a day on the water is like a workout-therapy combo?” Something like that. We’re not doctor’s, but we are captains and what we can guarantee is it’s a blast! If you’re still looking for the right health booster—otherwise referred to as a boat)—no worries, we got you covered.

13 Tips For Organizing And Decluttering Your Boat

There is a saying among boaters that any item not used within two weeks is likely unnecessary. When decluttering your boat, these should be the first items to go. Of course, we all know it is impossible to “deep six” every piece of boating gear — some things you just have to have on board!

In cases like these, you should consider items that serve double duty and can help keep your decks clear and functional. Here are a few tips as well as a selection of products that will help keep your boat from going overboard with clutter:

1.Keep an inventory of your gear.

Be sure to inventory your boat gear yearly and remove any items that you do not use regularly or that are redundant.

2.Utilize dock boxes.

A dock box can quickly and easily stow large gear that you do not need every time you go out on the boat. These come in various shapes and sizes to fit any space, and some even double as waterside loungers.

3.Use your vertical space to your advantage.

Install cargo netting along the interior walls of your boat above the main deck and/or in the cabin. Cargo netting is cheap, versatile, lightweight, and simple to install and adjust.

4.Got junk?

If your helm console resembles the “junk drawer” in your kitchen at home, consider getting a helm organizer to help keep your VHF radio, cell phone, sunglasses, and other items orderly and secure.

5.You can use items found in your kitchen.

Place smaller tools, fishing tackle and gear items in Ziploc storage bags before putting them into lockers or drawers. This will help keep the contents separate, dry, and visible.

6.There is a lot of unused space hiding out under your boat’s deck.

Beckson Marine makes Stow-Away Deck Plates that have small drawstring bags attached to hold things like winches and wallets. The bags can be removed for carrying on shore.

7.Make basic boat cleaning more efficient.

Shurhold’s One-Handle-Does-It-All System fits more than 40 different attachment heads. These items will easily store in consoles, under the deck, or in your dock box.

8.Hang your hooks and mops.

Aftermarket accessories like Beckson’s Clipper Molded Holding Clips and Soft-Mate Equipment Holders are great for holding various boat items like boat hooks and mops while keeping them close at hand.

9.Get an “all-in-one” tool.

The Snap-Tool Multi-Key from Davis Instruments is a boaters’ Swiss Army Knife, combining a dozen separate tools into a single stainless-steel piece. Use it as a deck plate key, zipper puller, hex wrench, screwdriver, scraper, bottle opener, and more.

10.Again, double duty is key here.

Accon Marine saves gunwale space by combining a flush-mount rod holder and cleat in a single, compact unit.

11.Love to fish but do not have space for all your favorite lures?

Install a flush-mounted tackle drawer to eliminate tackle boxes on deck. Additionally, you can plumb a watertight locker or baitwell in the deck to eliminate coolers and buckets in the cockpit.

12.Collapsible products make easy stow-aways.

Attwood’s portable landing net features a collapsible hoop and a telescoping handle that allows it to be easily stowed between uses.

13.Keep items tucked away until you need them.

Fortress Marine offers Stowaway Bags for its popular folding anchors, so you can disassemble and store your ground tackle out of the way until you need it.

If you have a clever onboard storage solution or product, please share it with us so we can pass it along!

Why Term Insurance your Best Bet?

navnit-marine-logoA life insurance policy that does not provide sufficient financial aid to the dependents at the time of need just defeats the purpose of buying the policy altogether.

The purpose of any insurance plan whether life or non-life, is to provide financial safety and aid the policy holder (or his/her dependents) in the case of an unfortunate event. Buying life cover is important and ensuring that it is adequate is paramount. A life insurance policy that does not provide sufficient financial aid to the dependents at the time of need just defeats the purpose of buying the policy altogether.

If one is looking at buying life cover then apart from the amount of insurance cover, deciding about the type of policy is also important. There are various types of plans to choose from; below we discuss basics about term insurance and how term insurance scores over other types of insurance plans.

TERM INSURANCE EXPLAINED:
Term insurance plans are the vanilla ice creams of the insurance world. They are the most basic plans without any frills yet they fulfill the purpose well. As is clear from the name, term insurance is insurance for a particular term. This term can vary from 10 to 30 years depending on the choice and age of the insured.

If the insured dies during the policy term and the policy is active the nominees get the sum assured. Sum assured is the lump sum amount the beneficiaries (nominees) get when the insured passes away. This sum assured in term plans is fixed and is not related to any external factors.

The premium paid by the insured depends on the age of the insured, policy term and the sum assured or cover that one seeks. These plans do not offer any money back or no amount is returned at the end of the policy period if the insured outlives the term.

Buy Term Insurance Policy

WHY ARE TERM INSURANCE PLANS A SAFE BET?
Term insurance plans are products that are designed to cover the insurance needs of the individual and do not mix insurance with investments. The primary reason for buying a term plan is to provide sufficient and assured financial security to your loved ones. Being designed in a no fuss way gives these plans a few inherent advantages which are as follows:

HIGHER COVER AT LOW PREMIUMS: When we compare the cover offered in term plans vis-à-vis premium paid they turn out be the most economically viable option. They offer higher cover at lower premium.

The premium paid for a term plan is much lesser than that would be required if a person wants to buy an endowment plan, ULIP or a money back policy that offers the same cover amount.

Since there is no investment component in these plans the entire premium is used to provide insurance cover which makes them a low cost high benefits option

COULD HELP IN FINANCIAL PLANNING: Term plans could also aid in financial planning. Depending on the life stage, number of dependants and liabilities the insured could choose to increase his life cover.

With an addition to the family you could choose to buy another term plan to match the additional needs; similarly if you take a home loan you could buy a term insurance that matches the loan amount and loan tenure.

The insured could choose to add specific riders and could also covert it to a whole life policy in certain cases. The amount that is saved by not buying an expensive insurance plan can be invested in another option that offers better returns.

UNCOMPLICATED AND FLEXIBLE IN DESIGN: When you buy a term plan, you are sure that if you pay a fixed amount as premium every year, your dependants are assured of getting a predefined amount in the unfortunate event. This amount will not change due to market conditions, the companies profit or loss or any other factor.

This provides certainty and you can plan exactly as per your needs how much cover your dependants require. Since no part of your premium invested you do not have to keep a track of what is being invested and what is being used to provide you premium. This can get complicated for a layman. While it is fixed in the sum assured; these plans provide you flexibility in paying premiums annually, bi-annually or quarterly.

Tax breaks on all insurance plans are an additional advantage. However it is important to remember that term plans should be bought as early as possible because with progressing age they become cost prohibitive and lose the edge of being economical when compared to other options.

Bayliner Introduces the All-New 175 Bowrider

The dynamic So Worth It! lifestyle that comes with boating aboard a Bayliner is more attainable and rewarding that ever with the debut of the all-new 175 Bowrider, fully redesigned. Not only has the 175 been the top-selling Bayliner model for many years, it has also long been one of the most popular runabouts on the water. The 175 is once again poised to capture the imagination of the boating world.

Image

The new 175 is built to suit a wide range of boaters, from families with young children to empty nesters who are just getting into the boating lifestyle, said Jeff Behan, president of Bayliner Boats. Lots of families may think a used boat is right for them, but with the 175 they ll discover they can get a new boat for a similar price.

Design, functionality and performance have all been improved, starting with the hull. It’s sleeker and more aggressive than ever, yet maintains Bayliners signature Beam Forward Design: The widest part of the boat extends farther toward the bow, creating more passenger and storage space aboard. The new hull carves out a deeper and more roomy cockpit, as well, propelling the 175
even further ahead as one of the most spacious and storage-rich boats in its class. The deepened freeboard also ensures a safe ride for the entire crew, including small children and pets.

The super-stylish hull doesn t just lend the boat an attractive profile and more onboard space, it also delivers impressive performance. The standard 3.0-liter, 135-hp MerCruiser sterndrive engine launches the 175 without breaking a sweat. If you get your thrills from watersports, opt for the Flight Series Package, which adds a new, forward-sweeping wakeboard tower, integrated Bimini top, a massive extended swim platform (also available as an stand-along option) and aggressive Flight Series graphics. Factor in
updated interior styling including new upholstery patterns, and the sporty 175 has the look of a competition ski boat.

Some of the most innovative functional improvements to the 175 affect storage. Bayliner designers sculpted a new motor box, which features high-capacity cleats on the front and top that allow for larger gear from multi-rider tubes to bulky coolers to be tied down with bungee cords. Two cords come standard. The convenient tie-downs will keep unwieldy stuff secured while underway. The motor box also designed with a flat, recessed surface to double as a table. Additionally, designers added more effective sound insulation to the interior of the motor box, ensuring a quieter and more comfortable on-water experience.

The smart storage solutions continue with the portside dash s lockable glove box, perfect for keeping valuables secure, and a massive ski locker under the floor. And as part of the new standard storage system that includes the motor box tie-downs, Bayliner offers a side storage system with cleats mounted under both gunnels.

In addition to the Flight Series Package (offered for the first time on the 175), an optional Fishing Package is available on the 175, which includes an eight-gallon aerated livewell, 12V MotorGuide® bow-mount wireless trolling motor with quick-release mount, a Garmin Echo 150 fishfinder, a non-skid bow casting platform and pedestal seat, and hullside rod storage.

2012 175 Bowrider Specifications
